CURE FOR BAD BREATH 


Bad breath is a general health problem in society. Offensive smell from the mouth may be due to many reasons. The main reason is the presence of anaerobic bacteria’s in the biofilm formed on the surface of the tongue. 

These bacteria decay the proteins present in the food resulting in the production of some offensive gases like hydrogen sulphide, skatol etc. 

Bad smell from the mouth in the early morning is seen in almost all age and gender individuals. This can be controlled by maintaining proper oral hygiene. 

Even after cleaning the mouth, some people may suffer from bad breath due to some problem in the mouth or in the surrounding areas. Some general health problem condition can also produce bad breath.

1) Oral hygiene: 

The mouth should be kept clean every time after having food to reduce bacterial action. After food gargling with lukewarm water is very much essential. 

Even after having small food products like snacks, sweets, and biscuits cleaning with water is necessary. Brushing should be done two times daily. 

It is said that early morning wakeup brushing is for beauty and bedtime brushing is for the body means good health. 

2) Brushing techniques: 

Knowing the proper brushing technique should be must and followed for better result. Many people brush vigorously like fighting with tooth this may be causing damage to the gums. 

Even excessive brushing like brushing after every food and drink can also damage the enamel. Bristles of the tooth brush should be smooth but hard enough to remove the stuck food particles from the gaps. 

Knowing the direction of brushing is the most important thing. The upper teeth should be brushed in a downward direction and the lower teeth in an upward direction. This is applicable to both inner and outer surfaces of the teeth set. 

Next is the crown of the teeth; here brushing is done in anterior and posterior direction keeping the brush position in the same direction. This is applied to both the upper and lower set of teeth. 

3) Tongue cleaning: 

The tongue is equally responsible with teeth for the morning bad breath. The white or yellowish coating on the tongue will cause bad breath. 

This is more well marked in the morning and should be cleaned twice daily with the help of a clean tongue cleaner. Tongue cleaner must be used gently without harming the taste buds on the tongue. 

4) Toothpicks: 

Toothpicks are small strips of wood or plastic with a pointed end. This is used to remove food particles stocked between the teeth gaps. This tiny strip is very useful after eating meat, fish etc. It should be used gently to avoid damage to gums. 

5) Gargling: 

After having every meal gargling with lukewarm water is very useful. For better result, you can add little common salt and dissolve it in the lukewarm water. 

Nowadays there are many different types of mouthwashes is available in the market in different trade names and flavours. Gargling with mouth wash will also reduce bad breath. 

6) Food habits: 

Protein present food articles are known to produce bad breath smell. For example; meat, milk, fish, egg etc. If these food articles are taken, then proper cleaning is essential. Some food articles are known to produce a particular type of smell which may be unpleasant for others near. 

Raw onion is the best example as it is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away and a raw onion a day keeps everyone away. Small food articles taken in between lunch and dinner can also cause bad smell (nuts, fried items etc). 

To get rid of bad breath maintaining regularity in food timing is the most successful thing. 

7) Water intake: 

Dryness in the mouth will make a favourable condition for the bacterial activity resulting in bad odour. Saliva is needed to keep the mouth moist and to lessen the bacterial proliferation. 

Production of saliva is nearly connected with the water balance of the body and hence sufficient quantity of water intake should be taken to maintain the production of sufficient saliva. 

8) Mouth fresheners: 

Natural and artificial mouth fresheners with many flavours available can reduce the intensity of bad breath to some extent. Spicy articles are generally used for this purpose. Chewing spices like clove, cumin seed, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger etc, are useful. 

All citrus fruits can reduce bad breath smell. Flavoured mouth fresheners and flavoured chewing gums are available in the market. 

For emergency needs, these products are very helpful, but some may cause damage hence should be used with caution and only when there is no alternative.

 1) Remove the cause of Bad breath: 

Bad breath is common in some general and systemic diseases like diabetes, fevers, gastric disorders, liver diseases and stomach problems etc. By try and removing or reducing the primary cause the bad breath can go automatically.

 5) Tooth extraction: 

If caries is deep with the destruction of teeth with bad smell, then the extraction is the better choice and a dental implant can be filled in the gap. 

 6) Tonsillectomy: 

Patients with recurrent tonsillitis will have bad breath due to offensive discharges and release of pasty materials through the crypts of tonsils. Those patients get great relief after tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils).
